THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CANADIAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

President Barack Obama and supportive members of Congress were able to get the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) passed, in part by extolling the virtues of the Canadian health care system. In speech after speech, Obama has touted the alleged lower cost, “universal coverage” and better medical care of that system. All of the mentioned supposed benefits are untrue, but the most disconcerting fact is that Mr. Obama has never discussed any deficiencies of the Canadian system.

OLD VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE OLD STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.
CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green...'
ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, We shall overcome.
Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray for the grasshopper's sake.
President Obama condemns the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper's plight.
Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.
Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of
the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, with nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken
over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and peaceful, neighborhood.
The entire Nation collapses bringing the rest of the free world with it.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
Be careful how you vote in 2010.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees... I don't feel threatened.. I don't feel discriminated against.. That's what they are, Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Hurricane Katrina)... Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response.. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'

In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about.. And we said okay..

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.
Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.
Pass it on if you think it has merit.

If not, then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

A HISTORIAN'S CONCERNS

Dr. David Kaiser is a respected historian whose published works have covered a broad range of topics, from European Warfare to American League Baseball. Born in 1947, the son of a diplomat, Kaiser spent his childhood in three capital cities: Washington D.C. , Albany , New York , and Dakar , Senegal .. He attended Harvard University, graduating there in 1969 with a B.A. in history. He then spent several years more at Harvard, gaining a PhD in history, which he obtained in 1976. He served in the Army Reserve from 1970 to 1976.

He is a professor in the Strategy and Policy Department of the United States Naval War College. He has previously taught at Carnegie Mellon, Williams College and Harvard University. Kaiser's latest book, The Road to Dallas, about the Kennedy assassination, was just published by Harvard University Press.

History Unfolding:

I am a student of history. Professionally, I have written 15 books on history that have been published in six languages, and I have studied history all my life. I have come to think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is simply a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus.

Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten to fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.

We demand and then codify into law the requirement that our banks make massive loans to people we know they can never pay back? Why?

We learned just days ago that the Federal Reserve, which has little or no real oversight by anyone, has "loaned" two trillion dollars (that is $2,000,000,000,000) over the past few months, but will not tell us to whom or why or disclose the terms. That is our money. Yours and mine. And that is three times the $700 billion we all argued about so strenuously just this past September. Who has this money? Why do they have it? Why are the terms unavailable to us? Who asked for it? Who authorized it? I thought this was a government of "we the people," who loaned our powers to our elected leaders. Apparently not.

We have spent two or more decades intentionally de-industrializing our economy. Why?

We have intentionally dumbed down our schools, ignored our history, and no longer teach our founding documents, why we are exceptional, and why we are worth preserving. Students by and large cannot write, think critically, read, or articulate. Parents are not revolting, teachers are not picketing, and school boards continue to back mediocrity. Why?

We have now established the precedent of protesting every close election (violently in California over a proposition that is so controversial that it simply wants marriage to remain defined as between one man and one woman. Did you ever think such a thing possible just a decade ago?) We have corrupted our sacred political process by allowing unelected judges to write laws that radically change our way of life, and then mainstream Marxist groups like ACORN and others to turn our voting system into a banana republic. To what purpose?

Now our mortgage industry is collapsing, housing prices are in free fall, major industries are failing, our banking system is on the verge of collapse, Social Security is nearly bankrupt, as is Medicare and our entire government. Our education system is worse than a joke (I teach college and I know precisely what I am talking about) - the list is staggering in its length, breadth, and depth. It is potentially 1929 x ten...And we are at war with an enemy we cannot even name for fear of offending people of the same religion, who, in turn, cannot wait to slit the throats of your children if they have the opportunity to do so.

And finally, we have elected a man that no one really knows anything about, who has never run so much as a Dairy Queen, let alone a town as big as Wasilla, Alaska .. All of his associations and alliances are with real radicals in their chosen fields of employment, and everything we learn about him, drip by drip, is unsettling if not downright scary (Surely you have heard him speak about his idea to create and fund a mandatory civilian defense force stronger than our military for use inside our borders? No? Oh, of course. The media would never play that for you over and over and then demand he answer it. Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter and $150,000 wardrobe are more important.

Mr. Obama's winning platform can be boiled down to one word: Change. Why?

I have never been so afraid for my country and for my children as I am now.

This man campaigned on bringing people together, something he has never, ever done in his professional life. In my assessment, Obama will divide us along philosophical lines, push us apart, and then try to realign the pieces into a new and different power structure. Change is indeed coming. And when it comes, you will never see the same nation again.

And that is only the beginning.

As a serious student of history, I thought I would never come to experience what the ordinary, moral German must have felt in the mid-1930s In those times, the "savior" was a former smooth-talking rabble-rouser from the streets, about whom the average German knew next to nothing. What they should have known was that he was associated with groups that shouted, shoved, and pushed around people with whom they disagreed; he edged his way onto the political stage through great oratory. Conservative "losers" read it right now.

And there were the promises. Economic times were tough, people were losing jobs, and he was a great speaker. And he smiled and frowned and waved a lot. And people, even newspapers, were afraid to speak out for fear that his "brown shirts" would bully and beat them into submission. Which they did - regularly. And then, he was duly elected to office, while a full-throttled economic crisis bloomed at hand - the Great Depression. Slowly, but surely he seized the controls of government power, person by person, department by department, bureaucracy by bureaucracy. The children of German citizens were at first, encouraged to join a Youth Movement in his name where they were taught exactly what to think. Later, they were required to do so. No Jews of course,

How did he get people on his side? He did it by promising jobs to the jobless, money to the money-less, and rewards for the military-industrial complex. He did it by indoctrinating the children, advocating gun control, health care for all, better wages, better jobs, and promising to re-instill pride once again in the country, across Europe, and across the world. He did it with a compliant media - did you know that? And he did this all in the name of justice and ..... . change. And the people surely got what they voted for.

If you think I am exaggerating, look it up. It's all there in the history books.

So read your history books. Many people of conscience objected in 1933 and were shouted down, called names, laughed at, and ridiculed. When Winston Churchill pointed out the obvious in the late 1930s while seated in the House of Lords in England (he was not yet Prime Minister), he was booed into his seat and called a crazy troublemaker. He was right, though. And the world came to regret that he was not listened to.

Do not forget that Germany was the most educated, the most cultured country in Europe. It was full of music, art, museums, hospitals, laboratories, and universities. And yet, in less than six years (a shorter time span than just two terms of the U. S. presidency) it was rounding up its own citizens, killing others, abrogating its laws, turning children against parents, and neighbors against neighbors. All with the best of intentions, of course. The road to Hell is paved with them.

As a practical thinker, one not overly prone to emotional decisions, I have a choice: I can either believe what the objective pieces of evidence tell me (even if they make me cringe with disgust); I can believe what history is shouting to me from across the chasm of seven decades; or I can hope I am wrong by closing my eyes, having another latte, and ignoring what is transpiring around me..

I choose to believe the evidence. No doubt some people will scoff at me; others will laugh, or think I am foolish, naive, or both. To some degree, perhaps I am. But I have never been afraid to look people in the eye and tell them exactly what I believe-and why I believe it.

I pray I am wrong. I do not think I am. Perhaps the only hope is our vote in the next elections.

The passing of Senator Edward Kennedy was truly the end of an era. He had been extolled as the "lion of the Senate." Understandably, given the impact of his life, the news media were filled with stories about Kennedy, his family, his trials and tribulations and his contributions. I was most surprised to read that a month before his death Senator Kennedy had written a letter to Pope Benedict XVI, which was delivered to him by President Obama. As a practicing Catholic, I took great interest in Kennedy's thoughts about his Catholicism at the end of his life.

Those federal overachievers at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force have issued new guidelines for standard mammogram screening, raising the recommended age from 40 to 50, and the lowering frequency from annual to biennial. What this Task Force recommends can affect what services Medicare will cover -- that's present-day Medicare, which is on track to become the future-shock of universal Obamacare.

It will come as a surprise to nobody that the over-50-biennial mammogram is the recommended standard within the Canadian national health care system (though doctors can still use discretion if the patient has a family history of breast cancer).

The People's Democratic Party has again proven that they are not really a party of the people. On Oct. 13, the Senate Finance Committee approved a health-care plan that is slated to cost $900 billion over 10 years. Of course, the tax increases begin almost immediately, the benefits are delayed, and after 10 years the costs increase dramatically. All of this as Medicare and Medicaid are circling the event horizon of a black hole into which they will disappear in 2018.

HOW LONG, OH LORD? ABOUT 16 WEEKS

Canadian conservative think-tank, The Fraser Institute, has just released its annual report on wait times for Canadians in search of surgery. This is a calculation of how long it takes a patient to move from the initial appointment with the family doctor, to the appointment with the specialist, to the appointment for the diagnostic testing, to the receipt of the results of the diagnosis, to the day of being wheeled into the operating room.

Salient points:

(a) the median wait-time for the entire country is just over 16 weeks, ranging from Ontario (lucky me, 12.5) to Newfoundland (unlucky me at the family cottage, 27.3)

(b) despite having substantially increased the amount of money being poured into the national health care system over the same number of years, wait times have not substantially changed since the Institute's report of 2001.

Read 'em & weep.

SWINE FLU PANIC IN PERSPECTIVE

MORE TALES FROM SINGLE-PAYER HELL

It's just anecdotal. But it's rich. Learned over the weekend from the local [rural Newfoundland] anaesthetist:

A certain town in southern Newfoundland is home to one of the handful of good small regional hospitals in the province. However, the nearest CT scanner is in St. John's, at the province's only major-league hospital -- a four-hour drive away. So you come to the regional hospital with chest pains, and the attending physician wants to give you a CT scan to check out your heart. You'll have to get an appointment in St. John's, and then travel. If they send you home from the hospital to wait your turn, you'll wait three weeks or more. But if you've been admitted to the hospital, the wait is only a matter of days. So what should the doctor do?

Of course: the doctor admits the patient, for no other reason than to move him ahead in the queue. He spends the better part of a week trundling aimlessly up and down the hospital hallways in his bathrobe, taking up a bed and using hospital supplies and services on the public dollar -- all to game the system into cutting down his wait-time for a necessary diagnostic procedure.

But hey -- it's FREE!

Not long ago, over at the Mother Blog, I sounded off about medical care in Canada, to this effect:

MY TWO-CENTS' WORTH ON HEALTH CARE:

There are many comments and criticisms one could make about any single-payer [government] health insurance system, such as Canada's. But on that subject, I am fond of making this factual (not critical) observation:

The Canadian Health Care System is a gift from the American taxpayer and their national military.

Why? Because if Canada invested in its own defense to the extent required to genuinely protect its people and territory without dependence upon the United States, the country wouldn't have a hope in Hades of affording socialized medicine.

The U.S. military is 2,300,000 strong (regular plus reserves), with plans for another 750,000 to be added within the next three years.

The Canadian military is less than 100,000 strong (regular plus reserves), with no plans for increase. The number has already increased from its nadir in 2001 [having fallen by one third in the decade since 1991].

Canada's population is approximately one tenth [10%] that of the U.S., and its land mass is larger.

Canada's military population is less than one half of 1% [.043] of that of the U.S. [Feel free to help me with the math if I've screwed this up.]

Canada is essentially defended at the expense of the United States, with Canadians secure in their knowledge that the U.S. would never permit any military threat to their northern neighbour, because it's just too close to home and would leave America vulnerable.

So Canada's far (FAR) from perfect health care system is even more expensive than anybody is letting on. In at least one sense, it has cost Canadians their sovereignty.

I would only amend these remarks by emphasizing, because it needs to be said, that in the Good Old Days before Trudeaupia infected the land, Canada had a proud tradition of punching WAY above its weight in joining the community of nations for the preservation of the civilized world.

Proportionately to its population, Canada's military contribution to both World Wars was substantial -- almost staggering. KIA's ran at 10%, if memory serves. Another member of the British Commonwealth, the then-independent mini-country of Newfoundland, made an even larger proportional contribution: for example, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in the Great War, Newfoundland casualties came to 90% -- but they stayed in, kept joining up, and felt themselves born as a nation.

Today's Canadian Forces, ridiculously undersupplied and undersupported, and ever at the mercy of political winds, has acquitted itself with honour in Afghanistan, its ranks still heavily populated with the sons and daughters of the Maritime provinces -- as well as Québèc, amazingly enough [their storied Royal 22nd Regiment called "The Vandoos", for vingt-deux].

Historically, Canadian support for the military cratered in an inverse ratio to the rise of the statism and universal entitlements of Trudeaupian socialism (under which the military branches were forcibly amalgamated in 1968, into the generic "forces", sporting a dull airline-pilot-style service dress). The numerical nadir of the forces was reached around 2001, but has crept upward since then (with distinctive uniform restoration too).

As a percentage of GDP, Canada's military budget ranks one-hundred-and-eleventh in the world.

So, despite their valiant character and record, today's Canadian Forces lack sufficient numbers [IMHO] to single-handedly beat back a serious invasion of even their youngest province [that would be Newfoundland], much less the whole country [the second largest national land-mass in the world].

But it's a small price to pay for universal health-care.

Right?

This health care plan gives the Commissioner of Health Choices the power to determine future benefits within the plan. The promotion of abortion can be easily added once the bill is passed. This is another example of liberal incrementalism at its finest.

CANADIAN 'SINGLE-PAYER' CARE = Sometimes it just doesn't pay

With all the talk these days about the pros and cons of government health care systems, especially on the Canadian or British models, there have been a couple of topics that I've never heard come up in the discussion -- something which perhaps is not discussed because it's kind of unimaginable.

First, let's make the distinction between the Canadian and British models. In Britain there is a "two-tiered" system, in which public and private medicine are practiced at the same time, with certain doctors, clinics, hospitals, and services operating in the private sector for fees that they determine for themselves. This means there is faster and more efficient medical service available to those who can pay for it. Persons of a left-wing bent find this as unfair as they find any and all things that money can buy for those who have it. In my view, all it means is that where there's a line-up for services in a public health system, private care helps to swiftly and dramatically shorten the queue.

In Canada on the other hand, with rare exceptions, private provision of publicly-funded services is not permitted. Or, if permitted to operate, may not charge more than the state is prepared to reimburse. In recent years, absolute desperation for MRI services has eroded the state's monopoly on them, allowing private clinics in some provinces, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Unless, of course, you're looking for an abortion. Abortion is considered an essential service which must be funded and available in every province, and private for-profit clinics operate in most provinces. Abortion advocates are quick to point out that private clinics deliver services more cheaply and efficiently than hospitals, but one is not allowed to apply that logic to most other medical procedures.

Dentistry, cosmetic surgery, and many therapies are not covered by the government, so practitioners may charge what the market will bear. In more prosperous times, non-critical procedures like electrolysis were once covered by the public system, but became casualties of cost-saving measures. Okay, fine: electrolysis an "essential service" yesterday -- not essential today. That seems reasonable enough. But what will be next on the chopping block when money gets tighter?

There was a time when independent specialists, like pediatricians or obstetricians, could determine their own fees, and the government would reimburse the patient according to its approved fee schedule. This was referred to as "extra billing" on the part of the doctor.

When my first child was born in 1980, doctors were still allowed to extra-bill, and my obstetrician charged a total fee of $500 for 9 months of pre-natal care, any type of delivery (normal, c-section, whatever), and all post-natal visits. She informed each patient that she charged what she thought was fair, and if anyone had trouble meeting that fee they should speak to her and she would work out some arrangement. The government fee schedule in 1980 considered all those services to be worth a mere $350, and we willingly paid the extra $150 for the services of one of Toronto's most dedicated obstetricians. By the time my second child was born two years later, extra-billing was illegal, and the doctor had to charge no more than what the government prescribed.

What this means is that all doctors become government employees. They can see as many or as few patients as they please, but their fees are determined by a government bureaucracy, as are the services to be covered. My experience is confined to the province of Ontario (each province runs its own health insurance scheme, within certain perameters dictated by the feds in exchange for federal funding -- effectiveness of provincial systems varies widely, especially as concerns wait times).

In Ontario, GP's are paid according to the number of patients they see and medical procedures they perform. This means that if you need a prescription renewed before you have a chance to see the doctor, the doctor can no longer issue a bill for speaking to you and your pharmacy on the phone. For awhile after this service was disallowed, doctors would renew and the patient would pay a fee the next time they came into the office. However, the doctors experienced long delays or even non-payment for services by phone (can you imagine a lawyer being prevented from collecting on these "billable hours"?). Before long doctors ceased to provide telephone services at all, except perhaps in an emergency.

Other services either ceased or were provided only for individual fees -- need a vaccination record for your kid's school or camp registration? That will be 25 bucks, please. It's not "extra billing" because the government doesn't pay the doctor anything for it, so he's on his own. Some pediatricians devised a plan whereby you could pay an annual fee per family (e.g. $100) for all such non-medical services, which is a big help to people with a number of young children. If your kids are older and less in need of such things, you can choose to pay a set fee for each service as it comes up.

And remember: you are paying these fees on top of a monster payroll deduction (a "premium") for your provincial health plan, plus the cost to yourself or your employer for private secondary coverage which might give you dental and orthodontic coverage, semi-private hospital room, prescription drugs, eyeglasses and annual eye exams, etc., none of which are covered by the province. [Standards change: annual eye exams were once covered, but in recent years were cut back to every second year for most of one's adult working life. Ontario grants women a mammogram every second year after age 50 -- I believe the American recommended standard is annually after age 40.]

There's something else that happens when doctors and nurses are all government employees. Every so often they decide it's time to STRIKE.

What this usually means is not a total collapse of the system, but a work-to-rule regime in which all elective surgeries are postponed (and since the patient may have waited months or years for such surgeries, like knee replacements, this could be both dangerous and crushing). Or in which the ordinary routine of TLC can go by the boards.

In 1989 I had what is called a "missed abortion": an embryo died not long after conception but instead of naturally miscarrying it remained attached in utero for another six weeks or so. Eventually the process of miscarriage began, and it was necessary to remove the conception by D & C (dilation and curettage). This occurred during a period of "work to rule" by hospital staff. My ob/gyn, true to form, did everything with her usual attention to detail -- even her kindest bedside manner was in full force (normally she was a crusty old dame).

But the nurses were at minimal staffing levels, and kept pretty much to their station, doing only the barest required rounds. Naturally, there were hardly any patients around because only emergency procedures were being done, but that didn't mean I got any real attention from them. Despite the fact that I could be expected to continue bleeding for some period of time, if I wanted a change of sanitary pad I had to ring for it, and then it was brought in and set down on my dining cart. The nurse then turned on her heel and made a fast exit, and I had to sit up and reach for the cart in order to get it. Had there been any unanticipated mishaps, such as excessive bleeding, perhaps even causing unconsciousness, they would never have known because they never looked and they never asked.

At some point my husband and I came to understand that my hospital stay was finished, though we were quite unclear as to what the check-out procedure should be. I got dressed on my own, gathered my goods, and headed for the desk at the nurses' station. We stood there perplexed, muttered something to the effect of, "Is that all there is?" and were abruptly sent on our way. Discovering that our pregnancy was dead, and having it surgically extracted, all within less than 72 hours, had been a numbing experience. The only thing that could have made it worse (and did) was feeling like the forgotten diner stuck at the dark corner table by the kitchens.

My obstetrician (bless her) learned that I had felt neglected during the work-to-rule, and wrote me a letter of apology. That's the thing -- I really have no complaints about Canadian doctors and nurses on the whole. They're as qualified and caring as anybody in the profession. We've been blessed with some fantastic personal physicians. But there are not enough of them, and they work, damn hard, under the constraints of an under-funded, over-managed, and over-stressed system. A staggering proportion of medical school graduates see no future at home, and high-tail-it to the U.S. to practice under freer conditions. American hospitals regularly attend Canadian job fairs and advertise in newspapers to recruit nurses with higher pay and better conditions than they could ever get in Canada. When it comes to both timely medical services and jobs, the flow is one-way: southward. If the United States adopts Obamacare, where will all these folks go???????

They won't go to Britain. Private practice is expensive to set up. And public hospitals -- well, let's put it this way: when I arrived in Toronto 35 years ago, I used to remark that the subway platforms and trains were so clean they were probably more sanitary than many a public hospital in the big cities of both Britain and the States. Public transportation infrastructure in "Toronto the Good" ain't what it used to be -- much of it is so grubby and run-down that you'd think it was a British public hospital. I have that on eye-witness authority.

The first thing most people think of when it comes time to tell horror stories of Canadian single-payer medicine is the wait-lists for both diagnosis and treatment. These are very real, much worse in some provinces than others, and, yes, people die marking their time in the queue for service. But the waits are not the only drawback. As Americans ponder the prospect of adopting a similar system and having the government attempt to manage it for a population TEN TIMES the size of Canada's, they should give some serious thought to how it feels to be nickeled and dimed by physicians trying to figure out how to juggle their overhead and make a decent living. And then they should give even more serious thought to how they will fare every time the doctors STRIKE.

It is a common misconception that the free enterprise system is at fault for the current high cost of medical care in the US, a misconception that the current administration has no desire to refute. However, the government's regulatory and control practices are really at fault. Ever increasing and more punitive government and Medicare regulations set the standards for the actions of the private insurance companies. Sometimes, these can best be understood by analogy.
Let's look at the airline industry hypothetically as it would operate if the government had as much control over it as it does over health care. To see how complex Medicare is we can turn to over 130,000 pages of regulations and penalties and contrast that with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations numbering about 1,000 pages. We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).

We'll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood .

You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N.. but we will no longer be paying the bill.

You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. Those of us in who have studied the sciences are familiar with big numbers. For instance, Avogadro's number is the number of atoms in a quantity of an element known as a mole. For Carbon 12, there would be one mole in 12 grams of Carbon and that would contain Avogadro's number of atoms. This number is unbelievably large: 602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. A Googol (not Google) is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. Another familiar constant is the speed of light, which is 299,790,000 meters per second. I propose a name for a new constant in economics to represent the sum of $1 trillion ($1,000,000,000,000): the "Obama's Number." All three are of unimaginable scale. Now there's a headline for the ages.

I wish Dr. George Tiller had not been gunned down, anywhere. It doesn't change the fact that he was a baby-killer, a regular practitioner of the most grisly and barbaric form of abortion on the late-term viable unborn baby (for a healthy fee of five grand). But killing him is counter-productive, to say the least.

I'm slightly at a loss for words about this, which is good because I'd probably find the wrong ones. Robert Stacy ("The Other") McC ain speaks well at this difficult moment:

The alleged assailant, Scott Roeder, is about as "typical" a pro-life advocate as the the Reverend Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church brood are typical Christian believers. I guess it's fitting that the Phelps clan wasted no time in showing up to support the murderer. They deserve each other.

Roeder began his career as a nutjob by joining up with the "Freemen" movement, an anti-government anti-tax cult that instructs poor dupes how to declare themselves "sovereign men" so they can dodge their taxes and legitimate creditors. (Hard to find a link to this bunch that isn't completely suspect.) He was also charged with possession of bomb-making materials, but acquitted due to procedural irregularities on the search -- according to his ex-wife this just made him more self-righteous.

So in other words, whatever flirtation he may have had with mainstream pro-life groups, he is one of those people who has always been of no use whatsoever, unwilling to do the kind of hard-slagging shoe-leather work that stays within the law and tries to change minds. It appears that stewing away in his little rage-bubble in the end proved unsatisfactory, and it appears that when he finally lifted a finger it was wrapped around a fire-arm. Lazy sod.

So in one blast of a gun, a murderer has shot the legs out from under every reasoned argument and every reasonable person who deplores abortion and works for the day that every child will be welcomed in life and protected by law.

Thank you so much, idiot.

Dr. Tiller joins the very short list of abortionists who have been killed for their profession. This list remains an infinitessimal fraction of the number of abortionists killed on episodes of Law and Order: Criminal Intent and in other television and film fantasies regularly conjured up by the artistic supporters of "a woman's right to choose."

And that, as Forrest Gump would say, is all I have to say about that.

FLOTUS: NO CHEAP DATE

President Obama and wife Michelle did a quick hop down to The Big Apple to catch a Broadway show, then back home again the same night. Needless to say, it cost more than that similar jaunt taken by Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown to Havana, in Broadway's timeless "Guys and Dolls". Cost estimates have run anywhere from $24,000 (Ha! are you kidding me?) to 75,000 (getting warmer) to $250,000 (at least, I'm bettin').

Now, as the mother of a certain Marine who flew a 100' helicopter from California to Wyoming, as part of a Normandy-style landing operation to facilitate Dick Cheney playing a round of golf during the last administration, I have no illusions about what it costs for the President to go safely anywhere for any purpose, and Lord knows we don't expect him to live like a monk while he's in office.

Or do we? At least we can say for sure that Cheney did not follow any of his well-escorted vacations with a speech scolding the American public into regarding the prospect of their personal economic train-wreck as a "sacrifice" they are "called to make." (Very Biblical language for describing the Obamandated downhill slide on the poverty wagon -- appropriate enough, I guess, considering the Divine Source.)

So normally I wouldn't give the cost of a Presidential date night a second thought. But I'd be pretty surprised if any president in my memory ever did something similar on the public buck, that is, the drive-by drop-in for totally private entertainment purposes, to another city in another state, and home again that night. We've had some jet-set presidents who woulod be quite comfortable doing such things, but usually for fund-raisers or some public event, and likely coupled with some sort of official business. Other presidents (the Bushes come to mind) would not have been temperamentally inclined to this brand of rather decadent jetting about for private fun.

But whatever their personal habits, most of them lacked the rare kind of gall it takes to promise exceptional purity, preach sacrifice, enforce hardship, and live like a frickin' sultan.

All that without bothering to put on a tie.

I don't know about Michelle, but when I get all duded up I do NOT want to be escorted by a guy in an unbuttoned shirt. As usual, Michelle managed to screw up an otherwise good-looking ensemble with something inexplicable, in this case an electric blue clutch purse. But at least she had a "finished" look, complete with sparkly jewels. So POTUS, put on a damn tie. FLOTUS should have kicked your butt.

This is the first time I've ever heard the First Lady referred to as "FLOTUS", which is only logical but somehow still funny. It's probably just me -- the word is too reminiscent of my first childbirth confinement, when the Last Nurse in the Nation to bother wearing a little white cap and using proper technical terms kept asking me if I had passed any "flatus." She was actually a nice break from the presumptuous informality of her [our] generation, and I should never have referred to her as "Nurse Snippet."

“It is finished.” (John 19:30). The abominable actions by Fr. John Jenkins, president of Notre Dame University, who invited President Obama to give the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, came to fruition on May 17, 2009 at that formerly Catholic university. This was a travesty and a slap across the face of every faithful Catholic and indeed, every faithful Christian. It was an example of a rogue priest ignoring the directives of his superiors and a testament to the evil that occurs when “Thy Will Be Done” is construed as “my will be done”. Fr. Jenkins defended his invitation as one that would open a dialogue regarding the issue of abortion. Upon what does he hope to base that dialogue?

President Obama supports partial birth abortion and has been a steadfast supporter of Planned Parenthood and abortion on demand. He has vowed to continue to support this position and has appointed vehemently pro-abortion cabinet members, such as Secretary of State Clinton. Yes, Fr. Jenkins, let us dialogue.

Secretary Clinton spoke recently at the Planned Parenthood awards gala in Houston, where she received that organization’s highest honor, The Margaret Sanger Award. Clinton said of Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood: “I admire Margaret Sanger enormously, her courage, her tenacity, her vision’, and “I am in awe of her.” Further she said: “It’s the lesson that women’s empowerment is always, always about more than bettering the lives of individual women. It is part of a movement. It’s about economic and political progress for all women and girls”.

The supposedly pro-woman, pro-abortion mentality that Obama and Clinton support has resulted in some 50 million babies’ lives being purposely extinguished. This has resulted in 25 million women denied the right to life, the right to grow and mature, denied the right to vote and to add their voices to those of all women. How can anything be more anti-woman than to deny female babies the right to live? How can anyone be pro-woman when they support the violent termination of the lives of future women for the sake of their own convenience and comfort?

Margaret Sanger, the woman Clinton so admires, was a self professed Nazi sympathizer. She said this when referring to prevention of the birth of Blacks and Jews: "Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race." And, referring to blacks, she said: "Eugenic sterilization is an urgent need ... We must prevent multiplication of this bad stock." Perhaps there is room for dialogue here, Fr. Jenkins.

I do not know whether Fr. Jenkins has reviewed abortion statistics, but they are staggering. We rightly mourn all of our brave soldiers who have died in war and we honor them for their willing and selfless sacrifice. The sum total of all US service related deaths in all wars from the Revolutionary War until today is about 1.2 million. This is about the same number of people as the 1.2 million babies killed each and every year in this country due to abortion. Perhaps Fr. Jenkins could start his dialogue here.

Our country would have had to fight WWII for some 400 years for as many Americans to die as have been killed by abortion. There are as many Americans aborted in one day as have been killed in Iraq in six years. To kill as many Americans as are killed by abortion in just one year the war in Iraq would have to continue for some 1,800 years! Most amazingly, for the same number of US citizens to die in Iraq as have been extinguished by abortion since the Roe vs Wade decision, the war would have to be fought for some 75,000 years! Yes, Fr. Jenkins, let us dialogue with the president.

President Obama continues to promote an ongoing holocaust in affirming the absolute right of a woman or an underage girl to choose. Arguments such as “It’s only a fetus. I don’t have time for a baby. It will be inconvenient. It is not really human”, have been heard in the past. “They are only Jews. They are only Poles or Gypsies. We’re better off without them and they’re less than human”. When we depersonalize the victims and rationalize the action any evil can be made palatable to a supposedly civilized society and the most reprehensible aspects of history are repeated. This holocaust could only continue with the attitudes of people like Fr. Jenkins who wish to dialogue with the perpetrators instead of rebuking them.

Planned Parenthood performs over 200,000 abortions, receives more than $300 million dollars each year from our taxes toward a total budget of nearly $1 billion and a profit of nearly $250 million. To that end, it covers up the physical and sexual abuse of underage females, increased breast cancer rates in post abortive women and severe emotional trauma resulting in significantly increased suicide rates among women who have had abortions. The Royal College in the United Kingdom has warned that women who have had abortions are at increased risk of mental health breakdowns. Far from promoting the cause of women’s health, Planned Parenthood sacrifices women and babies on the altar of its own ideology and for its own profit. How can we dialogue with a president who, by supporting Planned Parenthood, supports the perpetrators of sexual abuse of young girls and is unconcerned that post abortive women commit suicide at more than twice the rate of their peers? How would Fr. Jenkins propose a dialogue with a supporter of these atrocities?

Planned Parenthood operates 80 percent of its clinics in minority neighborhoods. Almost as many African American babies are aborted as are born. A black baby is three times more likely to be killed in the womb as a white baby. Twice as many African Americans have died from abortion as have died from violent crimes, heart disease, accidents and AIDS combined. Every three days more African Americans are killed by abortion than have been killed by the Ku Klux Klan in all its history. Since Roe vs Wade, abortion has reduced the African American population by 25 percent of what it would otherwise have been. Is there any other organization in America that could have so strong a following, receive so much money in tax dollars, be so proudly promoted in our schools and on our streets, yet be as openly and vehemently racist as Planned Parenthood or its supporters? How would Fr. Jenkins propose to dialogue with a president who supports the genocide of his own race?

What are the legacies of Roe v Wade, Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood and the culture of death supported by President Obama? Are we better off ? Are families stronger? Are children emotionally healthier and happier? Has social and economic progress resulted from essentially devouring our own young? The answer is a resounding no! We need social workers, psychiatrists and metal detectors in our schools. In the misguided pursuit of the false god of absolute personal freedom the proponents of the culture of death have insisted in teaching impulse gratification in our schools rather than impulse control and respect for the lives of others. We teach our children that it’s acceptable to deny the right to life of a baby and then wonder how it is possible for a tragedy such as Columbine to occur. If we taught our children that every human life is sacred the killers at Columbine may not have felt it was their right to choose. It is the pinnacle of ignorance for us to expect children to understand that killing a classmate they don’t like is wrong, but killing a baby who may be inconvenient is progressive. This moral sewage is the fertilizer in which Columbine and other incidents like it grew, and continue to grow. It is this morally necrotic ideal that President Obama supports and to which the University of Notre Dame gave a platform.

There is ample evidence that instead of the empowerment of women and promoting equality socially and financially, abortion increases the “feminization of poverty”. The mindset that children are expendable resulted in a significant change of attitude among men. If a woman did bring a child to term, that was her “choice”. Children are the cement that binds families together and in fact are the reason for the existence of families. Once they could be discarded like the weekly trash there was no reason for men to remain associated with women in family units. Between 1969 and 1978 the number of poor households headed by women doubled. Divorce rates have increased markedly over the past 30 years. Poverty rates among women and female children have increased, not decreased, especially for African Americans. There are a greater percentage of women in poverty now, precisely because of the attitudes that promote abortion, than there were before Roe v. Wade. The culture of death proponents simply do not understand that children are the cement of families and families are the necessary foundation of societies. Remove enough of the cement and families, then entire societies, will crumble. Shall we dialogue on this?

I, too, am in awe of Margaret Sanger, but in an entirely different way! Some may not have noticed the real implications of the words Clinton used when she said: “women’s empowerment is always, always about more than bettering the lives of individual women. It is part of a movement.” This is a very revealing and chilling statement and shows the underlying motivation of the culture of death. These words are reminiscent of those used by Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Hitler in promoting the “cause” over the bodies of expendable individuals. Yes, in Clinton’s own words, the culture of death is not really about helping individual women. It is about promoting a social and political agenda that subjugates the individual to the will of those in political power and makes individuals dependent upon those in power. President Obama and Secretary Clinton must be reminded that truth is the greatest enemy of those who promote the culture of death and truth is the greatest ally of those who hold all innocent human life to be sacred. President Obama should have been rebuked by Fr. Jenkins, not invited for a dialogue.

Our new president is the voice of the culture of death. He and Prime Minister Pelosi are in the process of repealing conscience protection for doctors and other health care personnel. The "Freedom of Choice Act" will give a legislative seal to the atrocity that was the Roe vs Wade decision. There will be freedom of choice, but only for those who agree with the culture of death.

Perhaps Fr. Jenkins has forgotten Luke 9:55. “But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of.” There would have been no shame had Fr. Jenkins admitted a mistake and corrected it. There would have been no loss of honor in standing firmly as a supporter of human life. There was great shame and dishonor in continuing along a course of prideful disobedience and allying himself and the University of Our Lady with the supporters of the culture of death. By using the excuse of starting a dialogue Fr. Jenkins dishonored the priesthood, his university and the Catholic Bishops. In his act of disobedience, Fr. Jenkins has taught Catholic students to have a selfish disregard for the teaching and authority of the Catholic Church and a lack of regard for the teaching of Christianity.

We who are pro-life have a responsibility to promote the respect of all persons as equal members of society. We embrace people of all races, religions, ages and infirmities. We must promote individual human rights for all. The first among these rights must be the right to life, for without this right, the other rights dependent upon it are meaningless. We must continue to stand for the right of every pre-born person to experience the blessings and joys, as well as the tribulations and difficulties of life. For all of these experiences encompass the nature of life. We must continue to stand firmly against the prevailing culture of convenience and death and condemn it for being anti-woman, anti-family and racist. There is no excuse for weakness or equivocation in this responsibility and there is no excuse for the actions of Fr. Jenkins and the University of Notre Dame. I hope that, for Fr. Jenkins, as far as his tenure at ND, it is finished.

We have seen the beginning of the revolt of the taxpayer with the tea parties. We now need to take it to the next step. One of my friends has, I believe, the best solution. We should form a taxpayer's union. The only way to prevent the liberals from transforming this country into a socialist republic is to tie the purse strings. We are going to proceed in the direction of formation of this union. Our goal will be ultimately to have tens of millions of members. As those expected to bankroll the new social order, we will conduct a strike. That will consist of the higher earning members and others who can afford to do so taking time off work. Depending on how it works out, this can be a week, a month or even longer. The effect will be to reduce the revenue to the government immediately. We can choose decreased income through ever increasing taxation or by reducing our work load. In continuing the status quo we work harder and keep less of the fruits of our own labor. In the second scenario we work less and deprive Chairman Obama and Prime Minister Pelosi of the means to effect the destruction of our democracy. Harvard Law School professor, former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, former Vatican delegate to world conferences on women, and avid pro-life advocate Mary Ann Glendon has stood athwart history shouting "Stop!"

Well, not shouting so much as just saying "No." I've been waiting for this. She did it without grandstanding. It looks like she contemplated it as possibly an opportunity to be a countervailing voice. But in the end she decided that graduations are not debates, nor are they proving grounds for campaigns of self-justification on the part of wobbly university presidents.

Glendon did not immediately turn down the invitation to receive Notre Dame's Laetare Medal for Catholic witness when she learned that she would be sharing the stage with avidly, RABIDLY pro-abortion-rights President Barack Obama. But two things altered her appraisal of the situation: that the President would be getting an honorary degree, and that Glendon herself had been turned into a couple of the exculpatory "talking points" being madly circulated by ND President Fr. John Jenkins after his invitation to the Infanticide President caused international uproar. Being so nakedly used as a human shield by Fr. Jenkins without so much as a by-y'r-leave obviously helped Glendon wrestle her misgivings to the floor, and she very politely declined to be involved in this distasteful exercise, planned and carried out in flagrant disregard for directives issued by the American Bishops about precisely this type of vehicle for scandal: the provision of a platform and accompanying honors for politicians whose policy positions are in clear opposition to the Church's teachings on the sanctity of life and fundamental justice.

Glendon has written to Fr. Jenkins saying thanks, but no thanks. She has released her letter to the press to make her reasons crystal clear. And she has declined to say another word.

Over at the Mother Blog, Winefred had something to say a couple of years ago about the cancer metaphor for liberalism, much as Kindly Doctor Summa has outlined below. It's a worthwhile mental gymnastic, I think, although far too easy to constitute exercise. Ya don't even break a sweat. Here it was:

I’ve spent the last month and a half dealing with the swift and deadly course of metastasized cancer in a family member, and will keep the details of that experience pretty much to myself. But in retrospect one can’t escape its perennial usefulness as a political metaphor.

Imagine the war on terrorism, with its primary mass lodged in Iraq, as an increasingly lethal cancer on the gasping lungs of the body politic.

Dr. Republican says:

You can try chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or some combination thereof, all of which can be painful and physically devastating to the point where you may consider the cure worse than the disease and may wish for death—but at the end of the day, you could very well extend your life for many healthy years. You could also opt to co-exist with the disease as long as possible, managing it with pain medication and a healthy living regime (and possibly a Mediterranean cruise or two), until such time as you enter into professionally managed palliative care towards a peaceful end.

Dr. Democrat says:

You should never have smoked.

Because you did we’re now going to spend years issuing subpoenas to everyone you ever met, and probing your past until we find out who offered you your first cigarette, whether that person owned shares in a tobacco company, whether the package had a warning label, if you were sold cigarettes as a minor, if the manufacturer had engaged in false advertising or covered up medical research on the negative effects of smoking, if your school provided adequate anti-smoking education, if your mother smoked while driving you to school, and (if you’re female) whether you took up smoking in order to eat less and conform to unrealistic ideals of body image foisted on you by the fashion industry.

Have I left anything out?

Everybody dies. But most of us don’t advocate refusing even to confront a fatal disease. Death may be inevitable—the blood-soaked triumph of a new Muslim caliphate is not. With Dr. Republican (ideally) you get some course of treatment—with Dr. Democrat you get diagnosis of everything but the cancer.

The internet is all a-zap with reports on the severity of the swine flu outbreak in Mexico, and its emerging hot-spots at points northerly. One of the oft-expressed concerns is that the outbreak went into full flare just days after the return of President Obama from this most recent leg of his Le Ruego Me Disculpe Tour -- especially because Felipe Solis, a noted archaeologist, greeted Mr. Obama at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, and then promptly died of swine flu the next day.

Now, I have made my rapidly increasing disdain for President Obambam/Obumsfeld/Obarometer-of-Doom pretty clear (look deep into the Well) but in response to the possible danger to his health from swine flu, I have but this to say: if you're a prayin' soul, pray now, pray hard, PRAY for the continued health, well-being, and security of the sitting Commander-in-Chief.

That's because, if there are two words in the English language more frightening than "HOPE" and "CHANGE" they are:

"PRESIDENT BIDEN"

Am I right? Hit your knees, America. We CAN get through this crisis.

When you turn on CNN and see that the President of the United States has exhibited behaviors 1, 2, and 3, you know that you are mere seconds away from the consummation of #4.

Or maybe not, according to Rosslyn Smith at American Thinker. So glad I read this.

But we can't lose sight of this: Michael Scheuer, one-time team captain of the CIA hunters of UBL (Bin Laden), writes of The Exalted Obamaramah's "breathtaking display of self-righteousness and intellectual arrogance" as our President spills the beans on the limits of interrogation methods, to satisfy his "desire to install his personal 'moral compass' as the core of U.S. foreign and defense policy."

Let the congregation say, "Amen".

In sooth, I have often been struck by Mr. Scheuer's own breathtaking self-righteousness and arrogance, and I don't buy all his hootings and tootings as wrapped up in his (temporarily) anonymous treatise, Imperial Hubris. Nor do I agree with his jabs at the former Prez in paragraphs 2 and 3 of the above-linked article.

But his every poignard aimed at Obama's hubris and insouciant, if not criminal, negligence in matters of national security is a bullseye. Scheuer is not a clever or entertaining writer like Mark Steyn, who makes you howl with laughter as his stiletto plunges home. But on this subject, Scheuer is passionate, and reaches a level of fury which, if contagious, is a genuine public service.

It was great fun and an eye opening experience. According to the left wing mainstream media the tea parties were attended by a "fringe" of right wing radicals. We saw regular, everyday, ordinary Americans fed up with the progressive march toward socialism and yes, fascism. These were people who understand the reasons why this country was founded and the principles that have sustained it. Signs like the one that said "Legalize the Constitution" and that from a child saying: "Don't rob my piggy bank" showed the understanding by regular people that the constitution is being trampled underfoot by the new order.

Now we hear that the Department of Homeland Security has issued a report on "Right Wing Radicals":

Anti-immigration: “Right wing extremist groups’ frustration over a perceived lack of government action on illegal immigration has the potential to incite individuals or small groups toward violence. If such violence were to occur, it likely would be isolated, small-scale, and directed at specific immigration-related targets.” Recruiting returning vets: “Right wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”
Gun-related violence: “Heightened interest in legislation for tighter firearms...may be invigorating right wing extremist activity, specifically the white supremacist and militia movements.”

Yes, quite "Hitler-esque". Everyone with a pro-life bumper sticker or pro-second ammendment views will be suspect. Imagine we right wing extremists asking for law based on the Constitution. How radical!!!

How do you attain fascism?
1. Claim to be "for the common, working people" against the wealthy. Hitler, Mao and Lenin all did that too.
2. Define an enemy. For Hitler, it was the Jews, for Obama and Pelosi it is conservatives and even returning military.
3. Promote laws that decrease the ability of that enemy to function, such as the Nazi laws preventing the rights of the Jews. For Obama it's the "Freedom of Choice Act", "Fairness Doctrine", etc. The names of the laws themselves are designed to hide the real purpose of these fascist documents.
4. Use a crisis to increase government control of industry, financial institutions, etc. Are we not seeing this?

Easter is, for Christians, the new "Pesach", the Jewish Passover, and "Yom Kippur", the Jewish Day of Atonement, together in the New Covenant.

We must on this day call to mind true suffering. The only way I have ever been able to put this into perspective is to imagine my own children, whom I have loved and nurtured, betraying, torturing and killing me. Of course, there the analogy ends, for even though this is unthinkable, it is possible that such a thing could happen and that I would be powerless to stop it.

But Jesus, as true God, had at every point the power to prevent His unthinkable suffering, yet He did not. As true man He feared it, asking that if it be possible, the cup pass from Him. Yet God, in the Person of the Son, Infinite and all knowing, had become man and in perfect union with His Father, He humbled Himself, was hated, betrayed, tortured and killed, so that He might redeem us!

How different a message from that of the world we hear all around us. Self sacrifice for the good of others. Real love is always sacrificial; the willingness to suffer for the good of the person loved. But today we are driven to convenience and the socially accepted idea that no cause and no love is of such importance that it deserves self sacrifice. Instead, we are told that it is acceptable to sacrifice others for our own convenience or to advance our social position. Chuck Schumer, that most vile senator from New York, said today the "far right idea of traditional family values is over".

So, during this Holy Week and on Easter, we see a clear choice. On one hand, the perfect love and sacrifice of our Lord that we might live. On the other, the selfish, self centered culture of hate, abortion, euthanasia and death supported by Senator Schumer, President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and so many others. We are asked to choose. What will you choose?

Faithful Catholics are outraged. You are well aware of the Holy Father's teaching. You are well aware of the directives of the US Catholic Bishops. You are giving a platform to a man who is the greatest threat to the innocent pre-born in the history of our country.

Christianity is about surrender, not prideful arrogance. We pray: "Thy Will be done", not "our will be done". We choose to surrender to the teaching of the Church, not because we are thoughtless automatons, but because we are thoughtful followers of Christ. The Holy Father, descended from Blessed Peter, is the Vicar of Christ on Earth. We are called to follow his teaching and that of the Universal Church, enlightened by two thousand years of Holy tradition and the Gospel of our Lord. You have clearly turned away from your responsibilities as a Christian, a Catholic and as a priest. You have pridefully placed your will above His.

I join with all people who truly value human life. These include other faithful Catholics, Christians of all denominations, faithful Jews, Muslims and those of many other religions in asking you to reverse course now. There is no shame in admitting a mistake, no loss of honor in surrendering to the Will of our Lord, Jesus Christ. There is great shame and dishonor in continuing along a course of prideful disobedience and allying yourself and the university of Our Lady with the culture of death.

God allowed you to reach a position authority. "Of whom much is given, much will be required". You are a "progressive" Catholic and therefore have likely done away with old concepts like the belief in salvation and judgement. If you proceed on this course you will no doubt believe in Hell once it becomes your forwarding address. Either act like a Catholic priest or stop pretending to be one.

ORTL Welcome Speech Convention 4/4/09

I want to thank all of you for coming to the Oregon Right to Life Conference. I will be setting up a table with free Prozac samples for those who need some.

It sure is a changing world out there. The political situation is certainly less favorable to us than it was last year at this time. Definitions have changed. What we say and how we say it is very important, for language is the means by which we communicate not just words, but our understanding, thought processes, intent and convictions. Those who seek to promote their hatred of real freedom and to promote the culture of death are experts in the use of obfuscation in order to advance their agenda.

A now well known political figure ran his campaign using the slogan of “change”. The growth in support for his party was largely due to his skills as an orator and his ability to obfuscate. During the political campaign he attempted to play down his extremist image. He claimed that capitalism and the church were in no danger from him. He reiterated that his ideas posed no threat to those who had worked hard and succeeded. He was lucky enough to be running his campaign during a severe economic downturn. He predicted worsening economic decline and when this occurred he was seen in a favorable light even by those who had previously opposed him. People began to say that if he was clever enough to understand the economic climate maybe he also knew how to solve it. He was, after all, an intellectual. The stock market had crashed, banks had failed, businesses were closing. With the drop in demand for labor, unemployment increased. Wages also fell and those with work had to survive on lower incomes. Foreign nations began thinking about calling in the debt.

As we know, this politician was elected to the highest office in the land. He supported programs that included redistribution of income and wealth, government control of large industries, nationalization of trusts and banks, more spending on free education and the suppression of religious institutions. He derided the people he felt were in control of the monetary system and said that certain segments of society were holding back the progress that he was going to ensure with his new programs. He supported abortion, euthanasia and the extermination of the unfit. This politician’s name, of course, was Adolf Hitler. Yes, words are very important.

Terrorist acts are now called: “Man Caused Disasters”. (I feel this s sexist and they should be called "person caused disasters"). The War on Terror is now known as the “Overseas Contingency Operation”. Terrorists should probably be called: “Disenchanted foreign persons with violent tendencies in need of a time out”.

But some definitions that have not been changed by those who would seek to change almost all reasonable definitions are those used to describe abortion and euthanasia. The murder of an innocent human baby is still called “A Woman’s Right to Choose”. The murder of an elderly or infirm person is called “Death with Dignity”. Some persons are said to have a “poor quality of life”. This really means they need killing. Again, words are very important. Hiding evil intent through euphemisms and obfuscation in order to lull the masses into compliance has always been the tactic of evil persons. The Devil comes not as a wolf, but as a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I don’t know about you, but I am mad. My grandmother used to say: “Animals get mad, people get angry”. OK, then I’m angry. I am really angry. Is that wrong? St. Thomas Aquinas wrote that anger can be good. If the anger is a reaction to an evil, is directed at the proper source and is proportionate to the evil being perpetrated. If this is the case, my grandmother was wrong. Things are so bad I should be absolutely mad!

I am angry with our president, who is the greatest threat to the pre-born, and to the country as a whole, in US history. I am also angry because I would have loved to have been able to vote for a black president. An African American man or woman of integrity and compassion I could look up to with pride. I feel cheated that I could not in good conscience cast my vote for the first African American president of the United States.

I am angry with Prime Minister Pelosi, who has had her wildest dreams fulfilled and is visibly ecstatic that millions more babies will be killed using our tax money. I am incensed that she had the audacity to travel to Rome hoping to set the Holy Father right on the issue of abortion. I wonder whether she thought she was going to get a Planned Parenthood clinic opened at St. Peter’s Basilica? I’m angry with Harry Reid because, well, he is Harry Reid. And I’m angry with the republicans because when they could have taken the moral high ground they were, in the end, responsible for 48% of the earmarks. I am angry at people who do not live out their convictions.

But, I am most angry with those who claimed to be pro life but voted for those who promote the culture of death. People like the president of my undergraduate university, a Catholic, Vincentian school. People who I believed were pro-life, and damn well should have been. They claimed there were other issues. Pro-life was but one of many important issues and in this case they voted on character, the economy, foreign policy, and jobs. My former dean proves the point that my former professor and good friend Dr. Ed Houser made many years ago. “The road to Hell is paved with good Vincentians”.

Anyone with half a brain and a modicum of decency knows that pro-life is not just another issue, it is THE issue. Why? Because it is this issue that determines the soul of the country. We cannot support evil and expect good to come of it. If we support good, all other problems are potentially surmountable. We are now seeing that having supported the culture of death; we will have inadvertently worsened all the other problems we were hoping to solve. Our economy will be in ruins. We will never again be the United States that was the leader of the free world. Our children will be left with a 10 trillion dollar debt they will never be able to repay. Another generation of pre-born Americans will be tortured and murdered. The destination for choosing evil is Hell. It’s a one way road and we have set ourselves on it at high speed. We will reap what we have sown.

I am sick and tired of people who claim to be aithful Christians yet voted their comfort instead of their consciences. I’m sick of hearing about “Democrats for Life”. That makes as much sense as “Pilots for Crashing”. If you voted Democrat you are not pro-life. You are pro-you.

What can we do now? We can stand and fight. We can refuse to give our country up to the fascists. We must be tireless. We must engage those we know who voted the “other” issues. We must be willing to sacrifice our comfort, our friendships, and our very safety in order to promote that which we know to be good and oppose that which we know to be evil. As Our Lord said, we must be willing to take up our crosses. We must be willing to lose our lives in order to save them. We must be more vocal, more willing to promote our ideals in public and in private even though that causes social or financial discomfort. We must learn, as did the saints of old, to suffer well. If we are not willing to stand up and protect innocent life we don’t deserve to live ourselves.

Now, for those who don’t know me, when I promote fighting I am not promoting violence. I am promoting strong, definitive action. For too long we have been willing to tolerate our friends who obfuscate as above. We must openly and vigorously challenge them. For too long we have accepted the opposing point of view in the workplace because it would be uncomfortable for us to argue our cause. No more. We must fight for the pro-life cause at every possible moment, whatever the potential financial or social risks or we will consolidate our losses, witness the deaths of untold numbers of innocent babies and lose our country in the process. If we do not change the political makeup in the next election we will have no country. It will have turned into “The Peoples Republic of America”, or “The Union of American Socialist Republics”.

Jesus did not say to the money changers in the temple: “Hey, do be good chaps and take your business outside please”! He threw their tables to the ground and ran them out. He displayed justifiable anger at sacrilegious practices. Get angry and stay angry. Keep it measured, directed, proportionate and remain righteously angry. For as is said in Ephesians 6:12, we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Don’t give up. Don’t you ever give up! God Help us and God Bless America. Thank you.

Oregon Right to Life Conference

I have had little time to blog lately. Ironically, the times are such that much more needs to be written. I have been preparing for the Oregon Right to Life Conference. Along with an introductory speech and introduction, I will be speaking on two topics that are near and dear to me; the erosion of physicians' right of conscience and the abortion-breast cancer link ignored by mainstream medicine. I have also been working to finish a book I am writing on health care entitled "Mismanaged Care". The conference is on April 4, 2009. I'll get back to writing and to the blog after that. Until then, I'm glad Obama is out of the country. He'll likely do less damage while away. Then again, maybe not. God Bless the pre-born!

Bite The Hand That Feeds You

Those of us in science very early on become familiar with Avogadro’s Number. This is the number of atoms in a quantity of an element known as a “Mole” a weight equal to its atomic weight in grams on the Periodic Table. For example, for Carbon 12, there would be one Mole in 12 grams and that would have Avogadro’s number of atoms.

This number is unbelievably large. It is the number 6 followed by 23 zeros! (600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000)

Another constant in physics is the speed of light. It is 186,000 miles per second, or 290000000 meters per second.

I propose a new constant in economics; the Obama’s Number. This would be the number 2 with 12 zeros after it. (2,000,000,000,000)

All three numbers are of unimaginable scale. The first two, constants in chemistry and physics, were designed by God and discovered by scientists. The third, a new constant in government spending, was created by Chairman Obama, Prime Minister Pelosi and Comrade Reed.

Americans earning more than $200,000 per year provide most of the jobs in this country and most of the tax revenue. Those in the “top 5%” pay 70% of the taxes and this is about to go beyond 90%. The new era of income distribution will destroy big and small businesses alike and will bankrupt the entire country. Obama is literally biting the hands that feed this country and it is nothing more than government sanctioned robbery. This is being done so that Obama and the Pelosi-Reed Triumvirate can gain unprecedented power over the lives of all of us in perpetuity.

Now, more than ever, the spirits of our founding fathers demand a response. We must rise up for the good of all Americans. If we do not act, the current administration will bankrupt the country.

"With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in;" - Abraham Lincoln

He understood the true meaning of charity. Lincoln was not talking about wealth redistribution or stealing from those who worked hard to earn their money. His understanding of charity was an attitude of good will toward all and actions that seeks to help everyone rise up rather than to create a perpetual underclass dependent upon the government forever.

Perhaps those earning over $200,000 yearly should begin thinking of themselves and not others. Perhaps the correct plan of action for those high earners and high producers would be:

1. Conserve money. Do not spend if the current practices are not reversed. Save for the inevitable crisis to come.

2. Reduce personal income. Take an extra two to four weeks of vacation. This will reduce the intake of the treasury under Turbo Tax Geithner by a huge amount, though not by Obama’s Number. All small businesses will do by continuing to employ, earn and produce is to feed the unending government redistribution efforts.

3. If high earners own more than one home, perhaps they should consider defaulting on one of them. Under the current plan, they probably owe more than it’s worth and homes will not regain their value for years, if ever. Why continue to pay so to underwrite those who do not? Continued payment as an honorable person will simply be used to help rob you blind. Credit ratings will mean nothing in the coming economy and under Obama’s plan there will be no tax deduction for the interest on higher value homes anyway.

4. Lay off employees. Obama will take care of the laid off workers and in the end small business owners will work less, pay less to the government and net income after taxes will not change much. Why continue to feed the huge alimentary canal that is Obama’s administration?

5. If this does not work, perhaps a consideration would be simply not paying taxes under Obama’s new rules. A refusal to pay taxes by literally tens of millions of Americans would overwhelm the ability of Mr. Geithner to deal with such numbers and would send a message that hard working Americans are finished being the lambs sacrificed at the alter of irresponsibility and socialism.

Sounds harsh, you say? Yes, but so was the US Revolution. This country was established principally because of taxation without representation. If our founding fathers could see what is happening under taxation with representation, they would want to re-join Britain. We must peacefully revolt or we will have national bankruptcy and worsening poverty for decades to come. Such action may temporarily worsen the economy, but it is the only chance we have to prevent being robbed by the government and to reverse these destructive trends that will cripple us for decades to come. We must sacrifice now for our children for they, and those of future generations, will blame us if we do not.

It's beginning to happen, with "Tea Parties" all over this great country. Join all hard working Americans to peacefully, thoughtfully rise up against this new tide. We are all in the same sinking ship. Everyone’s livelihood is at stake and we must as Americans come together. In the US revolution it was not rich against poor. It was rich and poor alike who banded together to ensure freedom for all. Freedom to succeed on one's own merits, not to plunder the homes of others. Equal opportunity does not and was never meant to equate with equal outcome. People of good will, poor and rich alike, know this and understand this.

At another very dark time in the history of the world, Winston Churchill was hoping for a change of heart in America when he said:
"Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing...after they have exhausted all other possibilities."

Let’s not prove Mr. Churchill right yet again.

Obama Doesn't Get It. Or Does He?

The stock market has continued its downward spiral. Americans have lost more than half of their savings. Obama, Reed and Pelosi continue on course to bankrupt the United States. Liberals still claim that we must continue on the present course because "we have to do something".

As a physician, I believe I must adhere to the famous dictum of Hippocrates: "Primum non nocere" or "First, do no harm". Contrary to popular belief, this is not found in the Hippocratic Oath, but in his writings on epidemics. Nonetheless, I can not simply "do something" to my critically ill patients. I must either do the right thing, that is, take action that has at least a reasonable chance of effecting the outcome desired. At the very least my treatment should move in the general direction of what is hoped for. Certainly, I must not do anything purposely or carelessly conceived to worsen the situation. I certainly do not have the right to do something that has been scientifically, empirically proven to have the effect opposite to that which my patient has been led to expect.

I have heard a liberal pundit claim that the "stimulus" plan is like applying a "shock to the heart" and must be done to jump start the economy. Thank God that person is not in the practice of medicine! We do not shock the heart of every critically ill patient. Were we to do so, most of the patients who end up recovering would have been buried long ago. We use "shocking", or in medical terms, cardioversion, only in specific circumstances. Can you imagine walking through the door of your doctor's office with symptoms of severe influenza only to find yourself being thrown down on a table and electrocuted? As a physician I have never tried this but I may consider it for liberal patients in the future.

There is definite, scientific, empirical evidence that the actions of the current administration will not work to "stimulate" the economy. The USSR, The New Deal of FDR, the Great Society of LBJ, Jimmy "the peanut man" Carter's policies all prove this. John Kerry and Joe "Foot in Mouth" Biden called for " a New New Deal". Is it really possible that the majority of Democrats, having attended the very schools to which they want to give more money, do not know that the New Deal was a dismal failure?

So, since the savior has taken office and the real powerhouse, Prime Minister Pelosi, has taken charge, here are the facts:

1. The stock market is in a precipitous dive. (See graph)
2. Unemployment has reached 8%
3. We have seen more money redistibuted and wasted than has ever been spent in history.
4. The US is headed for bankruptcy (The FDIC announced it will run out of money).
5. The Obama administration is now trying to get the hedge funds to help since China will not buy any more of our bad debt.
6. He continues to advocate taking money away from those who are productive and provide jobs and giving it to those who do not work and do not pay their bills. By any measure of logic this is doomed to fail.

Additionally, Obama has proven beyond the abilities of even his most ardent defenders to rationalize his actions that he lied during his campaign. His nominees for office have been criminals, Turbo Tax Geithner is the head crook at the Treasury, his stimulus plan contains so much pork that it can not be discussed by Jewish people during meals and if we threw it at Islamic terrorists they would break and run. Instead of using bombs in the future we could just drop volumes of his stimulus package on Al Kaida and the Taliban.

Change we could believe in consists of criminals and Clinton cronies running the government and plotting against freedom of speech, freedom of religion and retaliating against conservatives like Rush Limbaugh. Obama's only goal is to establish a socialist state and he is well on the way to that.

If Obama had a modicum of decency he would admit that Wall Street and Main Street are seeing his plan for what it really is and have determined it to be a failure. Any good leader knows when to alter course and is not afraid to do so. If he, Pelosi and Reed really cared about their country, they would heed the lessons of the past and change course before it is too late. If liberals really cared about this country...

If they do not alter course there are only three possible reasons: Either Obama, Pelosi and Reed are stupid, delusional or evil. Obama is not stupid. Pelosi is not delusional and Reed is...

GLOBAL WARMING-NOT

It seems the global warming extremists were met with stiff opposition for their DC protest. No, it did not come from conservatives. The opposition was from the weather and the "stiff" part consisted of frozen water that had presumably previously been warmer due to CO2, also known as ice and snow. So extreme was the cold blast that even Prime Minister Pelosi had to miss the protest because her flight was canceled due to the reverse warming. A wonderful story appears on the link above, complete with photos of the frozen participants. Click on the post title to go there. One has to wonder how these eco-nuts can talk with a straight face. I have included one photo. Note the snow on the bushes.

The Tea Parties

It's happening. All across this country people are rising up. Not only "rich" people. Ordinary hard working patriotic americans who understand what the Obama plan will do to our economy.

Now over the initial euphoria, people are now beginning to realize that most jobs are provided by those mean and nasty people earning over $250,000. They are realizing that most of those same nasty people at one time earned nothing. Most of these people did not inherit their wealth, they got it the old fashioned way; they earned it. They studied hard and worked hard to build the businesses that now employ others. Citizens are now beginning to understand that instead of so called "trickle down economics" they are going to see the faucet turned off!

For those who have taken the time to actually study what I will hereafter call "The Plan", it has become obvious that it is the route to national ruin. Those earning over $200,000 will no longer be able to deduct home mortgages. Thos earning less will see the "horrible" Bush Tax cuts expire and even though under The Plan they will get a small cut, the expiration of the Bush tax cuts will mean a net INCREASE in taxes for anyone earning more than $50,000 per year and possibly even those earning more than $25,000 per year.

Those horrible, selfish rich people earning over $250,000. will see their earnings reduced as the tax burden on them goes from the already 70% they currently pay to nearly 90% of the tax burden. Deductions will evaporate and jobs will as well. Water does not flow up hill and those who disdain "trickle down" economics must now explain how "trickle up" economics will function. Reaganomics has been supplanted by Obamanomics, but the physics does not make sense.

There MUST be a revolt. I am not, of course, talking about taking up arms (Though hiding them would be advised before the gun laws change). I am advocating peaceful protests as we have seen across this great country.

A passage from one of the greatest documents ever written states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." That document, for those such as Obama, Pelosi and Reed who do not recognize it, is The US Declaration of Independence.

We now must take a stand against the assault on our freedom and our rights. As Benjamin Franklin said when urging the Continental Congress to remain unified: "We must hang together or we shall all surely hang separately".

Prime Minister Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi is downright scary. Of course, anyone with a rudimentary understanding of politics knows that in a parliamentary system she would be the US Prime Minister. The problem is that we do not have a parliamentary system of government but she still thinks she is the US Prime Minister. She also thinks she is a Catholic Bishop!

No sooner had Savior Obama taken office that PM Pelosi went on a goodwill tour. She hopped on over to the Vatican to let the Holy Father know she was now in charge of the country and to correct him on the issue of abortion. Word has it that she wants the Pope to activate the Freedom of Choice Act in the Vatican and throughout the Church.

Her triumphant return and summary of her visit almost makes one believe that the Holy Father was ready to open a Planned Parenthood clinic at St. Peter's Basilica. However, the official Vatican response was a bit at odds with the PM's account:

“His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development.”

Seems the PM was given a strong rebuke by the Holy Father. Nancy Pelosi is the perfect example of a Pseudo-Catholic motivated by the first of the deadly sins; pride. Part of being a Catholic is to understand true authority. It is simple, really. Most parents have said to their children: "I am older and more experienced than you are and I expect you to understand that and accept my authority". Well, the Church is 2,000 years old, slightly older than Pelosi. Yet, she submits not to that authority but to her own.

As a Catholic I must accept that I have no religious authority. This can be hard for many, especially our Protestant brothers and sisters, to understand. Hence the number of Christian denominations, some 60,000 at last count I believe. However, as a Catholic I willingly submit to the authority of the Church and believe this Apostolic authority was handed down from Peter and the other apostles. This does not mean I am without dignity, intellect or opinion. It does mean, however, that on those rare occasions when my immediate inclination is to be at odds with the Church, I DECIDE to submit my will to that of the Church as in submission to the will of her founder, our Lord, Jesus Christ. I must place my will after God's will.

The US PM Nancy Pelosi has demonstrated her understanding of being Catholic. In so doing she has an interesting take on the The Lord's Prayer. It is her will, not The Father's Will, that should be done, on earth at least. I must conclude that she does not believe in Hell either. Well, she will certainly believe in it when it becomes her forwarding address.
